Getting your workplace to compost. A learning curve.

When I asked my boss if we could get a green bin and start utilizing the city composting program, he responded with "Do it."  So I did.  With a staff of just under a dozen in the SOMA hood one might…Continue

Latex gloves, balloons and (yes) condoms! 2 Replies

It’s easy to forget that latex is a natural, biodegradable material. So if after a party you’ve got tons of droopy balloons, latex gloves and used condoms sitting around (not asking any questions),…Continue

Home composting. Not just for the kitchen.

Don't forget that you can compost from every room of the house.  I think the bathroom is the most overlooked room of all. As long as your cotton swabs have cardboard wands, they can be composted. …Continue

Hey Kitty I have some you can get, If you want a lot you can get them from rainbowworms.com They are in San Leandro or San Lorenzo. You can order them online or I am getting ready to order some meal worms from them for my chickens so let me know if you want me to add some of them into the order and they can hang out with our worms until you can get them.

Hi, Kitty.  I don't know of any resouces in the East Bay, so you'll have to rely on other members.  You might try City Slicker Farms and even the permaculture folks at Merritt.  Let us know how it goes... I loves me some wrigglers!

I need to get some red wigglers to start my rabbit vermiculture project.  Anyone with an established colony willing to give some of those little buggers up?  I'd need enough to establish 2 medium size totes.

Hi Daniel,  I saw that you were asking about whether you can leave red worms out in our cold weather.  I leave mine outside all year and have never had a problem.  Mine are pretty established with lots of bedding/compost scraps.

Just convinced my workplace to begin composting our food waste into the city program.  Whooo Hooo!  Now, to teach them where to actually put a banana peel.  You would think a huge green arrow with COMPOST written across it would do the trick.  Any suggestions?

Wondering if anyone has feedback on the rolling compost bins vs the square stacked ones? I'm not so good at turning my compost in the stacked one I have. Wondering if switching is worth the cost?
