I was walking to lunch in downtown Oakland and came across morels growing in some woodchips. There weren't too many but still exciting to find!

Chanterelles are fruiting NOW in the East Bay hills. Look under oak and especially around ferns. They like to hide. Look for ground that is damp. They are a little muddy - Contrary to popular belief, you can wash them if they are really firm. Then trim off discolored parts and then let them air dry on a paper towel for about 4 hours. Then you can store them in the fridge until ready to cook.
Has anyone ever tried looking for chanterelles in the natural area above Mountain View Cemetery? I've scouted it, but seen nothing.
I wandered over to one of my patches this morning but it was barren.
I found some really nice chantarelles on Mt. Tam last weekend, but there were only a few of them
Hi Ed,
I went out yesterday in Oakland and found a bunch of older chanterelles but not many fresh ones have popped up yet. I'm thinking next week should be better. I'll let you know how next week goes.

Any body found any chanterelles after this rain. I've been busy and haven't been able to check my favorite sites yet.

Am I the only one that is waiting for more rains? It's the end of December and we've only had one or two good foraging weekends. I need to stock the pantry for the off season. But it appears that right now, the normal season IS the new off season. Grrrrr....
Hey Freya, the next time you go hunting with Kitty I'd love to come along. The pics I saw from your last trip were amazing!
I found some mushrooms the other night that look A LOT like Nameko, but I don't have an ID guide that can help me. I grabbed them riginally because I thought they could be sulphur tuft (for dye) but after seeing them in the daylight, they look different and strongly resemble nameko. Has anyone heard of these growing in CA?
