re: feral plums: there is a dirt road in san bruno that runs parallel to highway 35. you can access it from either berkshire or fleetwood (next to the playground) there is one feral plum tree on the trail as well as a mess of blackberry bushes, I've made great jam from both. I haven't been on the trail in over a year now because I moved to Pacifica but I thought I'd offer it up to everyone.

In Joaquin Miller Park by Sequoia Arena on the Sequoia-Bayview trail are tons of ripe huckleberries. There's parking right by the arena.

Blackberries are ripe in Dimond Park. See my blog post here.

I am new to foraging, but would love to join anyone who is willing to show me around.  I am starting at Mills in the Fall and can't wait to check out some of the edible surroundings!

TODAY! ANYONE WANT TO GO??

The tour brings awareness of the presence of primarily native plants on the Mills College campus and how they have been used over time. Dr. Susan Spiller will lead the tour of these plants. We will meet at the Botanic Garden and proceed from there. Tour starts at the Mills College Botanic Garden. Contact Britta Bullard by email or phone for more info.
Time: 3pm - 4:30pm.
Location: Mills College Botanic Garden, 5000 MacArthur Blvd., Oakland.
Cost: Free.

Anticipating the wild plum harvest in June.  Feral plums grow all over the Bay Area. Feral plums are often small so people don't eat them much. They still make great wine and jam.  Dimond park in Oakland has a bunch of feral plum trees.  A good way to spot feral fruit trees is to look for them flowering now and go back to visit in June or July to see if there is fruit.

Hey, you can make Saag Paneer with fresh wild mustard greens.  Made some tonight.  it was truly delicious.  Made Paneer fresh with whole organic milk and the juice of a foraged lemon.  Now, if I could only get one of those mini cows for my back yard ;-) Admit it, you all want a mini cow too.

Hey all, I found some perfectly ripe olives on the Mills campus ready for picking and brining.  You will need tarps and a broom or picker to pull olives down from high branches.  Write me off line if you want to know where they are.  I also learned Mills has map of all the trees and shrubs on campus...the olive trees were not on the map!  Perhaps they were planted since the map was created.

It was a great foraging week.  Found a field of Wild Mustard, AKA Rapini off Mission Blvd in Hayward.  Harvested the unopened flower heads and sauteed them in olive oil and garlic for a delicious meal.

See my blog link for photos and a recipe for wild mustard
